LONDON’S GREEN MEP SLAMS PLANS TO CUT LONDON CHARITY GRANT FUNDS

The Capital’s Green MEP, Jean Lambert, has today slammed Tory councils’
plan to cut grant funds for London’s charities and warned that social
issues would simply spiral out of control without them.

The first Association of London Government (ALG) Grants Committee
meeting since Labour’s losses in the local elections outlined a 33% cut
in the £28million fund annually distributed to voluntary groups across
London. Without this vital support key charities and organisations, such
as women’s refuge centres supporting communities across London, will
inevitably fail.

Jean, who has been London’s Green MEP since 1999 and lived in the city
for over thirty years, today said such cuts would be a devastating blow
to the Capital’s vital support network.

Jean commented; “The charities and organisations funded through grants
are a silent force working quietly throughout society and more often
than not are being taken for granted. It isn’t until people have a
personal need for assistance that their full strength and necessity is
truly recognised.

“The ALG simply can not pull the plug on funds that Londoners have all
come to rely on. We would immediately notice the absence of these
services with inevitable repercussions throughout society, something we
should not be putting at risk.

“If Tory council’s really do intend on carrying out the cuts a support
plan must be installed to address the problems these charities and
organisations deal with on a daily basis.”
