GREEN MEP STEPS UP CAMPAIGN AGAINST GASIFICATION PLANT AT FINAL HEARING

London’s Green MEP Jean Lambert will challenge Novera Energy’s proposals
for a gasification plant in London when she addresses the final hearing
in Stratford Town Hall on Thursday (14th September).

Novera Energy claim that a gasification plant in the London Borough of
Rainham would be a sustainable solution for London’s waste, even though
two previous proposals have been turned down, but to work efficiently
the plant would need a constant supply of Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF)
that must include a significant amount of plastic and paper. Novera’s
own non-technical summary of its environmental statement acknowledges
that the SRF feedstock ‘will largely be made up of paper, textiles, wood
and plastic’ which Jean fears will ultimately mean less material being
recycled.

Jean, who previously submitted a formal objection to the plant, said
that if the proposal went ahead it would raise many questions over
London’s commitment to a sustainable waste strategy. Jean said; “Though
the technology of the proposed plant is not identical to a mass-burn
incinerator, the EU Waste Directive’s definition of incineration does
cover Novera Energy’s proposals. Given the facility’s feedstock
requirements, we are in danger of redirecting recyclable materials away
from recycling.

“With London’s Sustainable waste strategy combined with efforts to
encourage recycling and meet targets it is astonishing that this
application for planning has come this far. If the Capital is serious
about becoming a sustainable city it should not even be considering a
unit such as this."

The hearing, involving the London Thames Gateway Development
Co-operation will take place at Stratford Town Hall on Thursday 14th
September 2006, 6.30pm – 8.30pm
