GREEN MEP CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT ACTION TO PREVENT MIGRANT HOMELESSNESS

Green MEP Jean Lambert has today called for Government action and
support to prevent the number of homeless EU migrants in London rising.

As Homeless Link revealed today that one in seven people using London
homelessness services are from Eastern Europe Jean hosted a meeting in
the European Parliament to discuss the findings of a report by the
European Citizen Action Service (ECAS) on mobility rights in the EU.

Jean, who is Vice President of the Green Group in the European
Parliament and Co-ordinator on the Employment and Social affairs
committee said; “A small number of homeless people on the streets of
London today are from Eastern Europe. Homelessness agencies are
currently the only places migrants gain the support and help they
desperately require but without the appropriate facilities or funding
sources for migrants, homelessness agencies and shelters are being put
under increased pressure. With the right Government support and action
however this problem is preventable.

“If there were dedicated advise lines giving accurate information for
people before they come to London and to help them if they get into
difficulties here we could avoid many of the problems and help people
into work.

“The report out today is really valuable in providing a number of
recommendations and practical proposals that would be effective right
across the EU. The European Parliament has this afternoon expressed
great interest in the report but the UK Government need to act now with
the relevant embassies to really make a difference.”
