MEP: BLAIR MUST CONDEMN COLLECTIVE PUNISHMENT

ISRAELI ATTACKS ON POWER PLANT ARE ‘UNACCEPTABLE’, SAYS LUCAS

GREEN Party Euro-MP Caroline Lucas has called on Tony Blair to condemn
Israeli attacks on a power plant that have turned off the lights in
thousands of Gaza homes.

“Acts of collective punishment of the Palestinian people are a clear breach
of international law and the Government make sure those responsible are
brought to justice,” said Dr Lucas, who is a member of the EU’s delegation
to the occupied Palestinian territories.

Speaking ahead of a vigil outside the House of Commons taking place later
today (5.30-7pm, June 30th, Parliament Square), Dr Lucas said: “Tensions are
escalating in Gaza, and it is the innocent civilians who are paying the
price.

“According to emails from the Gaza Strip, the already appalling living
conditions have worsened dramatically, with little food or fuel in the
shops. People are terrified to leave their homes after Israeli troops
dropped leaflets telling residents to avoid movement in the area because of
military activity.

“We are witnessing another humanitarian disaster, and the Government must
use all means at its disposal to condemn all breaches of human rights and
international law and ensure civilians are kept out of any conflict.

“Both sides in this conflict must agree to abide by international law and
democratic human rights standards – that means a cessation of violence,
whether sponsored by Hamas or the Israeli authorities.”
