Americans slay 'vampire' electronic devices that continue to suck electricity even when they aren't in use.
Greens welcome American Bill to require electronic devices be labeled to tell consumers how much energy is used when the device is in standby mode. (1)
Green Party Principal Speaker Keith Taylor today welcomed the bill: "Across the world, an enormous amount of energy is wasted through unnecessary use of standby devices. We all know about the killer impact of increasing carbon emissions through flying, but domestic energy use accounts for almost a third of UK carbon emissions, and up to 26% of this can be as a result of standby devices!(2)
"This bill will require a label that explains how much energy the appliance uses when in standby. Although the amount of energy consumed by the devices can be small, cumulatively it can really add up - with a heavy financial and environmental cost.
"Labeling is a step in the right direction, but the Green Party would like to see the use of stanby facilities phased out all together. For the most part they are an unnececsary, expensive and damaging tool. However, in some cases such as for people with less mobility they can be a very useful resource.
