EURO MP CONDEMNS VIOLENT OUTBREAKS AGAINST GAY PRIDE

Recent outbreaks of violence towards Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and
Transgender (LGBT) communities across Eastern Europe are a grave step
backwards for equality and human rights a Euro MP warned today.

Green MEP Jean Lambert, who is a member of the European Parliament’s
Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights today said the aggressive events
shamed Human Rights agreements across the EU and commented; “The spiral
of events we have witnessed over the past few weeks leaves a lot of
unanswered questions over the EU’s anti discrimination policy. We know
that at least 80 countries around the world still forbid homosexual acts
by law but there is no place for this narrow-mindedness in a modern
Europe.”

Fascist attacks on Russia’s first Gay Pride demonstration and
Bucharest’s experience of violent homophobia last weekend has fueled
concerns that Saturday’s equality march against homophobia and
intolerance in Warsaw will be met with a similar response.

“There is no excuse for the violent reception the LGBT communities in
Russia and Romania have received and such homophobic events cannot be
seen as acceptable anywhere in the world. The news that the City
Authorities in Warsaw have agreed to Saturday’s parade is encouraging. I
hope that they continue with this agreement and uphold
anti-discrimination policies effectively protecting the LGBT community,”
Jean continued.
