NEWS RELEASE
From The Office Of Jean Lambert, London's Green MEP

31st May 2006

‘END THE TORTURE OF GUANTANAMO BAY’ URGES EURO MP

Green Euro MP, Jean Lambert, today reinforced her calls for action to
end the suffering of those illegally detained in Guantanamo Bay as the
European Parliament debate on the situation of prisoners in Guantanamo
began.

Jean, who previously warned that the United States and Guantanamo Bay
had created a ‘legal limbo’ which in effect gave a green light for other
regimes to detain and conduct torture like activities, also visited
Washington earlier this month as part of the European Parliament’s
inquiry into the CIA ‘extraordinary rendition’ flights.

Speaking before today’s debate Jean, who has been named the top MEP on
Justice and Human Rights, said; “The ongoing illegal imprisonment of
those in Guantanamo Bay and the revelations of the CIA Extraordinary
Rendition Flights in the United States clearly demonstrates that the US
has failed to uphold human rights or international law. The EU must now
take a tougher stance on its relations with the US over such issues and
ensure that everyone has access to a fair trial and humane living
conditions.

“After 4 years since the first transfer to Guantanamo Bay there are now
approximately 500 men from around 35 different nationalities being held
there. We cannot forget their families who wait for their loved ones to
return, sometimes for years without justification for their
imprisonment. The fear and uncertainty of the outcome has serious
effects on both their physical and psychological welfare.

“It is time the UK Government took responsibility for the British
residents who remain in Guantanamo by bringing an end to the torture and
the detention centre permanently.”
