‘EVERYDAY SHOULD BE FAIR TRADE DAY’ URGES GREEN MEP
As the international celebration of fair trade takes place around the world tomorrow, London’s Green MEP Jean Lambert has urged the UK to really make a difference and buy fair trade goods everyday of the year, not just on World Fair Trade Day.
Today Jean, commented; “Some of the world’s developing countries face falling prices and a continued battle to get a fair price for their goods. They need our help to ensure they are no longer forced to work in unacceptable conditions. Through buying fair trade consumers can be sure that human rights and International Labour Organisation standards have been observed during production. With this support producers will gradually be able to develop their own independence.
“Consumers have got the choice to buy goods that are produced under fair conditions and World Fair Trade Day really demonstrates how accessible these products are. Fair trade goods are readily available through fair trade stores, catalogues, campaign groups and are being introduced to supermarkets but it is still vital that conventional companies stock the goods to ensure that buying fair trade becomes part of everyday life for all. Ultimately unfairly traded goods should be the niche market.”
Fair Trade Day started as a European movement of over 2000 world and fair trade shops. Now every second Saturday in May sees member organisations in 70 countries host a variety of events to promote fair trade.
