LONDON’S GREEN MEP CALLS ON THE CAPITAL TO COMPOST

As the sixth Compost Awareness Week takes place this week (7th – 13th
May 2006) London’s Green MEP, Jean Lambert, has urged Londoners across
the Capital to think before they bin their rubbish and put their waste
into the garden instead of the landfill site.

With over 30 million tonnes of municipal waste produced in the UK every
year it is vital that everyone plays a part in reducing the amount of
material being sent to landfill. Today the Capital’s Green MEP warned
that as London faces a summer of droughts and hose-pipe bans composting
was more important than ever before; Jean commented; “Composting is an
excellent way to manage our biodegradable waste. Not only does it reduce
the amount of rubbish going to landfill but improves the soil, cuts the
amount of water needed on the garden and reduces harmful liquids and
greenhouses gasses produced and ultimately saves us money!

“Over half the contents of our rubbish bins can be re-used, recycled or
composted so it’s important to really think about what we actually throw
away. We can all make this small change to our lives that really will
make a big difference to the environment we live in. I hope this week,
and the variety of events taking place, people will gain the inspiration
and information they need to start composting and really make a
difference.”

This year compost awareness week, which started in the UK in 2001, will
hold a variety of events including the ‘Compost Bus’, the chance to see
composting sites in action and special offers on home composting bins.
