WORLD OF MINORITY REPORT WILL BECOME REALITY’ WARNS EURO MP
London’s Green MEP, Jean Lambert, gave a stark warning that the erosion of our civil liberties will encourage a world where the Minority Report could become a reality, when she spoke at the Network for Peace AGM in Conway Hall, London.
Jean, who has been named MEP for Justice and Human Rights took part in the meeting which explored the ways in which peace movements and activities are hindered by recent and future planned curtailments on civil liberties and said; “Measures introducing ID cards, detention without charge and the capturing of DNA samples are breeching the Human Rights Act. There is no doubt that these will impact on our freedom and encourage the distinct possibility of the thought police becoming a reality. We have already seen an alarming readiness to use anti-terrorist legislation to deal with peaceful protest.
“I question the evidence to support the implementation of such measures and ask how the Government can guarantee these policies will be successful. The Government are supposed to be protecting us but slowly our civil liberties are being eroded leaving the public exposed to more danger than ever before."
Discussing the Legislative and Regulatory reform bill, which allows government to amend or create law without consulting parliament, Jean said: ”The proposed new bill threatens democracy and equality in the UK and extends the power of the Execution bypassing Parliament. This Government, like its predecessor, seems intent on extending the number of potential criminals by treating every citizen as a potential suspect. This is destroying trust between the Government and people.”
Network for Peace was set up to continue the work of the National Peace Council one of the oldest peace organisations in the UK. The organisation-based network is made up of a wide range of members including religious peace organisations and local and regional CND groups.
