Greens to give Kent County Council ASBO

Keith Taylor, Principal Speaker for the Green Party will today issue Kent
County Council with an Anti-Social Behaviour Order, on behalf of Kent Green
Party, for allowing air pollution to reach unacceptable levels in the
County.

Dr Geoff Meaden, campains officer for Kent Green Party commented:"We will
today deliver a replica Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) to the leaders of
the KCC Highways Department. This is because we believe that, by allowing
deadly poisonous air pollutants such as carbon monoxide to be increasingly
emitted onto our streets, plus allowing nitrous dioxide to build up to
levels beyond EU permitted levels, constitutes anti-social behaviour. Levels
of air pollution in Kent are getting progressively worse and there appears
to be no serious attempt to do anything about it. KCC must accept major
responsibility for this."

Cllr Keith Taylor commented: "If a teenager with a baseball cap on the wrong
way round was responsible for such a rise in air pollution, he or she would
be villefied and slapped with an ASBO. Why not the county council?"

Stuart Jeffery, coordinator for Maidstone Greens adds: "Since 1997 local
authorities in the UK have been carrying out assessment of air quality in
their area. The aim is to assist authorities in carrying out their statutory
duty to work towards meeting the national air quality objectives. If a local
authority finds any places where the objectives are not likely to be
achieved, it must declare an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) there. Once
an AQMA has been designated then the local authority must issue plans on how
they are going to solve the problem.

"The situation in Kent and Medway is that more than 20 AQMA's have now been
established. They are in Maidstone, Gravesham, Tonbridge & Malling,
Tunbridge Wells, Medway, Dover and very recently in Canterbury. All AQMA's
in Kent are due to traffic pollution and they typically represent town
centres, stretches of motorways or special areas such as the Dover Docks. So
why present an ASBO to KCC? What have they got to do with the problem? It is
because they are in charge of nearly all the main roads where air pollution
is occurring."
