GREENS EMERGING AS VITAL FORCE IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Greens declare candidacy list for forthcoming local elections:
**1300 candidates to be fielded across the country** **95% of London Boroughs to have Green candidates**
Peter Cranie, Green Party National Elections Co-ordinator commented: "With a total of 70 sitting councillors already, and over 1,300 candidates, the Greens are the emerging force in local government, where they have made steady gains despite the first past the post system that makes representation difficult for smaller political parties.
"We are confident of further gains, particularly in the London boroughs, and are the strongest challengers to Labour and the Liberal Democrats in a number of wards.
Jenny Jones AM commented: "Green gains are expected not just by us - a recent report by leading London academic Tony Travers points to the possibility of Green gains in three areas in London - Lewisham, Hackney and Islington. We've had elected Greens in London since 2000 and people know that with Green representatives they will get positive politics and councillors who really care about the local community."
The Greens also expect to add to their total number of councillors in the big cities and towns in the north of the country such Manchester, Sheffield and Huddersfield, where they already have established councillors and a growing level of support.
