LONDON’S GREEN MEP SUPPORTS CAMPAIGN AGAINST THAMES GATEWAY BRIDGE

Campaigners against the Thames Gateway Bridge will be given the chance
to get their voices heard on Tuesday 11th April when London’s Green MEP,
Jean Lambert joins with Greenwich Green Party for a public meeting in
Thamesmead.

The bridge, linking Beckton to Thamesmead, was intended to improve
accessibility to and within the Thames Gateway area supporting the
regeneration of East London. With few benefits to local residents, the
bridge looks set to simply increase levels of traffic and pollution much
of it from through traffic, bringing misery to East London.

Jean, who is supporting local community opposition campaigns in their
quest to stop the bridge expressed her concerns saying; “The Thames
Gateway Bridge is not a sustainable solution. We would see a surge in
the amount of traffic in the East London area and with no planned
facilities the traffic would have no where to go.

“London is already suffering from breeched standards of air quality and
increased traffic congestion in the area will simply make this worse.
Under EU laws the Government has until September 2006 to notify the
Commission that it has failed to meet clean air standards. The onus is
on the UK to admit and amend its pollution breeches. Surely planners
must see that the proposed bridge would simply plunge the capital and
the Government into deeper problems.”
