GREEN MEP CALLS FOR FREE, FAIR AND FUNDED EDUCATION

Green Euro MP, Jean Lambert joined with Coalition 2010 and the NUS, at a
student rally in Birmingham yesterday, as she called for action to
prevent the £3000 cap on tuition fees being raised even further.

The education demonstration saw students gather in protest against
further extensions to the education market that already deters students
from poorer, and under represented backgrounds, going into further
education.

Jean Lambert, Green MEP for London, gave her support at the rally and
voiced her concerns over the increasing fees and ultimately student’s
debts. Jean said; “It is totally immoral that students today are being
forced to enter in to society and starting their working lives, with
debts often amounting to more than their first years salary.

“Higher education should be freely available to anyone who wants to
learn new skills and provide a greater contribution to society. A
student’s choice of course should not be determined by the size of their
purse. What we need is a free, fair and funded education system that
gives everyone a choice.”

The Government will begin a review process of the £3000 cap in 2008 and
a decision will be made in 2009. Any changes will be implemented in 2010.
