Germany: Prophet Mohammed cartoons 'racist': Green MP http://www.expatica.com/source/site_article.asp?subchannel_id=52&story_id=27558 BERLIN - The leader of Germany's opposition Greens party said Friday that cartoons depicting the Islamic Prophet Mohammed as a terrorist were "racist" and that their publication across Europe had been irresponsible. Fritz Kuhn of the Greens underlined there could be no watering down of freedom of speech which remained an anchor of all European democracies. But freedom of expression had to be used responsibly, said Kuhn in a German parliamentary debate over the cartoons which have stoked Muslim anger around the world. "The (cartoons) are racist and dangerous," said Kuhn. Kuhn underlined that anger over the cartoons could not justify violence, especially from regimes which were using the cartoons to divert attention from domestic problems.
******************************************************** Holland: GroenLinks congress resolution on the future of the European Union The party congress of GroenLinks, gathered on February 11th in Tilburg, draws the following conclusions from the referenda on the European Constitution. These conclusions will guide further debates within the party on the future of the European Union. 1) As a consequence of the rejection of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe in the French and Dutch referenda, this treaty in its present form is off the table. 2) The French and Dutch no to the Constitution was not a yes for the present EU. Improving the European rules is more than ever necessary. 3) Public debate in the Netherlands on the future of the EU is still insufficient. This debate would benefit from: a) political parties, including GroenLinks, presenting their vision on the finality and the ultimate borders of the EU; b) political parties making this vision and the steps towards it into an issue for the parliamentary elections (May 2007); c) more clarity on the time frame and the procedure of a new treaty revision. 4) A new European treaty must offer more clarity as to the tasks the EU should and should not perform. To that end, limits have to be set to the proliferation of rules which results from the internal market. The choice for or against liberalization of public services should be made at the national or local level. 5) The EU’s decision-making capacity should be improved in areas which demand a common approach, such as foreign policy and sustainable development. 6) The EU must be radically democratized. This calls for a stronger European Parliament, greater involvement and influence of national parliaments, EU-wide citizens’ initiatives and referenda as well as more transparency (of the Council of Ministers, for instance). 7) A new European treaty must be brought about as democratically as possible, with maximum public debate. The task of drafting a better treaty should be entrusted to a new European Convention. This Convention has to include directly elected representatives of the citizens of the member states. 8) A new treaty may only be called a ‘constitution’ if it is concise and readable, contains binding fundamental rights and introduces a clear separation of powers. 9) A new treaty should be submitted to an EU-wide referendum.
