Green Party in England and Wales

New report backs up Green No to Nuclear (1)

78% of public have 'strong preference' for solutions other than nuclear
power for mitigating climate change

"These results show that, despite the scandalous attempt by the Government
and the nuclear lobby to frame energy debate within Britain in a 'false
context' of climate change versus nuclear power, the British public have
yet to be convinced.

"The Green Party has consistently called for greater investment in clean,
renewable and cost effective sources of energy. Contraction and
onvergence  - a science based framework for contracting global carbon
emissions to a safe level, while ensuring that rich and poor countries
gradually converge at a fair level of per capita carbon emissions - forms
the bedrock of our policy for tackling climate change.

"Behind the scenes, Tony Blair is assembling another dodgy dossier, this
time full of pro-nuclear propaganda designed to convince a rightly sceptical
public.

"Nuclear power is unsafe, uneconomic and unsustainable. After 50 years of
toxic waste production, we still don't know what to do with it. This is only
the latest survey to show the public's hostility towards another generation
of nuclear power stations.

"In the UK, no nuclear project has come in on budget - a staggering fact
considering the enormous subsidies provided at the public's expense.  Nor,
as is often suggested, is nuclear power carbon neutral.

"It is vital that the DTI Energy Review consultation to be launched on
Monday 23rd is honest about nuclear's fundamental problems and takes into
account the public's concerns over nuclear power.

"The government cannot continue to mislead the electorate about the human,
financial, and environmental costs of nuclear power. We are talking about
the future we pass onto our children, let it not be a tainted legacy."
