"Herculean effort needed to save Olympic sports"
7.5 Million Londoners have to share a paltry 131 publicly run swimming and
Figures revealed by the Green Group on the London Assembly show that 56,396
people, equivalent to 3 and a half times a capacity at Crystal Palace
Athletics Stadium, have to fight for access to every public facility
providing the core Olympic sports.
Darren Johnson, Green Party London Assembly Member, revealed the shocking
facts saying: "I am amazed at just how bad the current situation is.
Unfortunately, according to results from our freedom of information request
to boroughs, the situation is set to get worse in the run up to the
Olympics. In 2012, we expect over 60,000 people to be sharing every borough
managed swimming and athletics facility."
"What benefit can Londoners realistically expect from these Olympics if they
aren't even being given a fair opportunity to participate in the sports they
are going to be watching. Is it any wonder that only 14% of Londoners swim
regularly, whilst participation in athletics is negligible?" continued
"If increased sporting participation and health are to be significant
legacies of these Games then access to public sports facilities has to be
dramatically improved," concluded Darren.
