Joint Press Release by 'Green Tunisia' and Europe Ecology French Greens

This is a historic moment for Tunisia. By ousting Ben Ali, the dictator the Tunisian people have blazed the trail for true democracy in their country.

However many steps still need to be taken before the country is democratic. 'Green Tunisia' and Europe Ecology French Greens demand the immediate release of all political prisoners.

The presidential election must be organized within two months and satisfy democratic requirements.

Tunisian political parties, particularly 'Green Tunisia' must be able to freely organize themselves and participate in all elections. All democratic voices must be heard.

Europe Ecology French Greens and 'Green Tunisia' condemn France's position of supporting Ben Ali's dictatorship right up to the very end.

France has discredited herself once again this morning by supporting the accession of the Prime Minister, Mohamed Ghannouchi, Ben Ali's former right hand man, as President of the Republic.

France should support the still fragile democratic process and respect the Tunisian people.
